52 days, 85+ miles, 45 years

Last week I turned 45. I won't say that it's a complete shock that I would undertake the effort to become a 1/2 marathoner in my 45th year, but I hadn't planned on it. Let's face it, I'm not there yet either. I'm hovering around 2.5 miles per day when I run. That's more than I thought I would, but less than I need to be doing. My current training is actually not planning to run 13 miles, but rather 5. On March 15 my daughter Stephanie and I will run in the St. Louis St. Patrick's day marathon. We'll be running a five mile leg of it. So that's what I'm working up to now. How about you? What are you working up to?

I'll confess that I really need goals to motivate me to succeed. When I sit down to read, I set a goal for a number of pages. If it's the Bible I'm reading I'll plan on a number of chapters. I even set weekly and monthly goals as well. Recently I have been on a program to read 1 chapter of Proverbs (there are 30 chapters) and five Psalms (there are 150 Psalms) every day. That gets me through both books in a month. I've done that for 4 months now. But it's getting old and things have to be new and fresh to keep my attention. So I'll come up with another discipline plan for the beginning of the year and challenge myself to meet it. I do the same with prayer and other disciplines... though I have to admit my only plan for fasting is to avoid it completely.
We're closing in on the new year, what will you plan on doing... changing... improving in 2008?

Consider one of the following:

  • Invite a new person to church once a month for the year.

  • Offer to pray for a friend in need every week.

  • Choose one book of the Bible and read it through, repeatedly all year.

  • Get on an exercise regimen.

  • Pick one of the sermon series (click here for more information) and do some in depth study on the subject.

  • Find out about some of the new service opportunities the church is offering in 2008 and commit to one for the year.

  • Make a positive difference in the life of one of your neighbors.

Dave, I like you have to have things that stay new and fresh for me to be interested long term. My goal for 2008 is to exercise more and eat healthy. I am doing some research on eating a primarily vegetarian diet for several days a week. I like your suggestion about inviting a friend to church each month. Imagine what might happen to our congregation if even 25% of us could do that! Wow - that is an awesome vision. There are more goals I am working through - but one is having a work life that makes a difference for people. I don't have all the details worked out, but I am in for the ride.

Happy Belated Birthday. Hang in there on the exercise. Sounds to me like you are doing well.
