Christmas eve is one of the two times per year when people who rarely come to worship will avail themselves to the opportunity to meet Christ once again. The whole month of December is actually that way. People seem to find their way back to God's home this time of year. Maybe they just came with family... it's a tradition. They may have some sense that God is calling out to them. Or maybe they're fragile and needing to hear a word of healing and redemption. They will come for many reasons... maybe.
Actually, they may not come. Study after study tells us that people come to church primarily because they were invited. Who have you invited? You have a neighbor who only needs to hear the words "I'm headed to Good Shepherd for Christmas eve and I'd like you to join me." Give a co-worker a call at home, won't they be thankful you remembered them? How about that friend going through divorce, struggling with alcohol, facing unemployment, grieving a lost loved one?
At this time though, (Saturday, December 22, at noon) the freezing rain is coming down and snow is expected to accumulate to the tune of 2-4 inches. People are highly unlikely to come to worship for the first time when the weather is poor. If your invitation is not clear and compelling they won't come. Invite and change lives, even when weather is works against you.
Invite them to Christmas Eve worship at Good Shepherd, Monday, December 24....
