Psalm 23:1-3 (King James Version, circa 1500s) 1The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. 2He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. 3He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.
Above are some of the most beautiful and well-known verses in the Bible. It would not be difficult to meditate on these words as they are so familiar to us; however, consider the following verses from the same translation of the Bible.
Acts 24:25-26 25And as he reasoned of righteousness, temperance, and judgment to come, Felix trembled, and answered, Go thy way for this time; when I have a convenient season, I will call for thee. 26He hoped also that money should have been given him of Paul, that he might loose him: wherefore he sent for him the oftener, and communed with him.
Consider using a Bible written in contemporary language. Check the spine of your Bible for acronyms like NIV, NRSV, CEV or The Message. These are the translations I recommend. If yours is KJV or RSV, put it on the shelf with your other family heirlooms and museum pieces and purchase a more current version. If you can’t afford a modern translation, ask one of the Good Shepherd pastors or staff for a free copy.
Youversion.com and Biblegateway.com are both online Bibles with several translation options. Use these sites to choose the translation that best fits your reading preference. Try reading the passage from Acts 24 in several translations and see which makes sense; that’s probably the right one for you.
I use digital versions on my computer and phone; however, when I sit down to study I prefer print so I can make notes in the margins. My favorite Bible is torn and tattered from use, but it is worth its weight in gold to me.
