John 14 (NIV) 9Jesus answered: "Don't you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, 'Show us the Father'? 10Don't you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you are not just my own. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work. 11Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me.
In week two, I mentioned the image of the Christ follower as a window. The point of the window is to reveal the light and scenery that is beyond. The window is not the focal point. When you begin your faith life you are a window with flaws. Don’t get down on yourself for your flaws, simply allow God to perfect them.
Some flaws in glass warp and distort the view. You may have ideas that are warped by outside ideologies and cultural misperceptions. As you grow in faith and trust in God, you find these distortions are cleared up and it is easier for people to see the true God through you.
Some flaws are sins and habits you tend to return to. Think of these as dirt and smudges on the glass. You need a little bit of cleaning up. That will take a bit of discipline on your part and the help of a forgiving and redeeming God.
As you practice your faith, your ultimate purpose is to become like Christ and to encourage others to do the same. Jesus is asked, “show us the Father [God].” His response is simply, if you want to see God look at me and all the things I’ve done.
Consider how you can be a window to God today.
