Mighty God

See the prior post below for that quote from my sermon I promised to post.

Monday, December 15 – Read Jeremiah 32:17 – Every once in a while there is a natural disaster of biblical proportions. We see those events and often ask the deepest question of our faith, “Where was God?” Do you ever ask that question in the days when no disaster takes place? If there are 15 days in a year when tragedy strikes, do you thank God for His presence in the 350 when tragedy didn’t? What if you prayed each day for God’s power to be revealed in the good days and the bad?

Pray to see God’s power every day this week.

Tuesday, December 16 – Read Genesis 49:23-25 – Staying strong in times of great struggle is a concern for many of us. Most of us don’t face enemy fire or events that require great physical strength. However we can certainly relate to the term “stress” in our lives. It is true of our relationship with God that when we are at our weakest, God’s power is most potent.

Pray today for God’s power to face your most stressful moments.

Wednesday, December 17 – Read Isaiah 9:6 – “El Gibbowr” is the Hebrew term that we translate “Mighty God.” It suggests not only a sense of strength but also a sense of bravery as well as morally righteous. It’s no stretch to consider God as morally righteous, and that is certainly what we see in the life of Jesus Christ, however as followers of Christ we are supposed to be “Gibbowr” as well. To be brave in our faith so that we can live the outward moral righteousness of a Christ-follower is not easy. We need the power of God in our lives to do so.

Pray for God’s power to live a morally righteous life.

Thursday December 18 – Read Psalm 62:6-8 – God is a rock and a refuge according to this passage. As a rock, you can hide behind God and expect that the slings and arrows that others throw at you cannot harm you. Hiding behind God is not a cowardly act. Instead it is allowing God to be the leader of our lives. When others try to tell us which way to go and where we should turn, we measure that against the direction God is leading. As long as we’re behind God, it doesn’t matter where someone tells us to go.

Pray that you will see where God is leading and have the good sense to follow.

Friday, December 19 – Read Deuteronomy 6:20-22 – Some have suggested that we should allow our children to chart their own direction when it comes to their faith lives. This passage suggests a different tact. It tells us to be sure to share clearly with our children the great things that God has done in our lives. Take them to church, Sunday School, youth group. Assure that they learn about God from those chosen to teach. Then, when they are ready to make a decision of faith, they will be fully informed on the things of the God of Jesus Christ.

Pray that you will be a good witness to your children and they will be learners of the faith.

Saturday, December 20 – Read I Corinthians 1:17-19 – God chooses to show His power in a most unusual fashion. God chooses to use a symbol of human destruction as the center of His power. That power is the power He has over life and death. In the cross God demonstrates that he has the power to bring us through death into new life, just as He did with His Son, Jesus Christ.

Pray for the heart to accept the power of life over death that God chooses for each of us.
