In worship this morning Sister Kathleen Flood preached on Psalm 121. She shared a couple of thoughts that were pretty awesome to consider. The one that struck me the most is this, "God helps us when we help ourselves... assuming we're not self-centered."
At the end of her message the song leader got up and began the song, "Humble Yourself in the Sight of the Lord." For those of you that don't know that song, it's a call and response that goes like this:
{Men} Humble yourself in the sight of the Lord
{Women} Humble yourself in the sight of the Lord
{repeated}
{Men} And he...
{Women} And he...
{Men} Will lift...
{Women} Will lift...
{Men} You up...
{Women} You up...
{All} higher and higher
{Men} And he...
{Women} And he...
{Men} Will lift...
{Women} Will lift...
It's done as a lyrical chant and very beautiful. The really cool thing to me was that the song leader never gave instructions about the call and response part. Instead, we all just joined in. Obviously, we are all long time Christ followers. But there was something beautiful about everyone knowing when and where to join in. There is a part of worship where all are in on the story and join together in God's praise, that brings beauty and awe. I think it's true about all things that Christ followers do. When we act together, in unison, moving like a song in our ministries, God hears that as praise music.
