Lent Devotion: Prayer, Day One

Hebrews 11:6 (The Message) It’s impossible to please God apart from faith. And why? Because anyone who wants to approach God must believe both that he exists and that he cares enough to respond to those who seek him.

At Christmas we sing the song O Come, O Come Emmanuel. That prayerful song uses the Hebrew word that means God with us. It’s a prayer that is both a symbol of hope and a recognition of God’s real presence. This is a definition of what it means to have faith – to live between the hope and the promise.

As we live within faith, there is good news. The nature of God is to be known. Prayer is the conversation of knowing God. Our primary way to get to know someone on a personal basis is through having personal conversations. To know God in the depth of our heart is to be in conversation with Him – to pray.

This week we’ll focus on the many facets of prayer. We’ll start with simple and common prayer styles and progress to the deeper sense of living in the presence of God.

Because God chose to come to us in the personal form of Jesus Christ, we can know God. We can know the person of God. We can have a conversation that goes something like this, “God, I want to know you more. During the coming weeks, let’s get to know each other better. I’ll try to listen as much as I talk. My prayer is that you’ll speak in a way that I can hear, understand, appreciate, and live out every day. Amen.”
