Lent Devotion: Prayer, Day Two

In Luke 11:1 Jesus’ disciples say to him, “Lord, teach us to pray.”
Learning to pray seems so difficult to most of us. We think there is a right way, a particular formula, or a special knowledge or process that will garner more favor with God. It isn’t true. Speaking with God is as simple as opening our mouths (and minds) and sharing our lives.
It’s easier though if we have a way to start. One of the simplest forms of prayer is petition and intercession. This means asking God to be active in the lives of our friends, neighbors and ourselves.
The hand prayer is one way to get started. Hold your open hand in front of you and pray as follows.
Your pinky – pray for the smallest people in your life and in the world. Who are the children who need God’s help the most? Pray for your own children or those in your extended family by sharing with God your hopes and desires for their future.
Your ring finger – if you are married, pray for your spouse’s day, hopes and hurts. Don’t pray for how he or she can help you, pray for how you can help him or her. If you’re single, pray for your closest relationships.
Your middle finger – pray for the people who stand tall in your life. Pray for the leaders you follow. Pray for your employer. Political leaders always need your prayers. If you have a mentor, pray he or she will guide you the way God desires.
Your pointer finger – pray for the people who point the way for your faith. Who are the faith leaders in your life? Pray for their leadership and your willingness to follow.
Your thumb – the fat finger reminds us that often we only think about ourselves in prayer. It’s the closest finger to your heart, so pray to God about your needs and wants – but only after you’ve prayed the other fingers.

I use the acrostic PRAY
Praise and give thanks to God.
Repent of your sins.
Ask for others and then
Yourself.
